— DIY COOKIE DECORATING PARTY —
ROYAL ICING BAGS
Now that you’ve selected your cookie shapes, it’s time to get the next most important thing for your cookie decorating party —> Royal Icing Bags! Unlike buttercream, royal icing doesn’t melt and can stay in room temperature for the day! But of course, to keep them at optimal state, chill them and only take them out about half an hour to bring to room temperature before use. OH! And do remember to MASSAGE the icing bags VERY WELL for about a min or two per bag prior to using.
HOW MANY COOKIES CAN ONE ICING BAG DECORATE?
We get this question aloooootttt, but it really depends on how thick you decide to squeeze each layer, the size of your cookie and the amount of each colour you put on each cookie. Afterall, we’d probably like to have more than one colour on each cookie to decorate don’t we?
SO HOW MANY ICING BAGS SHOULD I GET?
As a general gauge, one icing bag can cover approximately three to four Classic sized Cookies, again depending on the factors mentioned above. Each guest should ideally have a minimum of 2 – 3 icing bags so they get to play around with colours, decorate and add details!
By the way, we don’t usually consider black as one colour (especially for kids) as most use it to add details like drawing of eye and nose, or to personalise the cookies with their names or words. UNLESS, you’re going for a black theme then yes of course! Otherwise, you may consider getting one extra black icing on top of the 2-3 icing each person gets.
HOW DO I STORE THE ICING BAGS?
You may chill the icing bags when you receive them and take them out about half an hour before use to bring to room temperature. Keep in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. And air-conditioned indoor room would be ideal after the icing bags are out from the refrigerator.
HOW LONG CAN THE ICING BAGS STAY AT ROOM TEMPERATURE?
Royal icing does not melt. It is, however, a normal occurrence when icing separates when left to sit. This means that you will notice that it appears very watery, and the water might even flow out if the icing bag has already been snipped opened. In general, icing can be left out for a couple of hours (BUT it still depends on your room temperature and humidity!). If you notice that the icing and water has separated, simply cover the opened tip and massage the icing bag to “mix” them back together again before using.
HOW DO I USE THE ICING BAGS?
This step is VERY IMPORTANT! Please MASSAGE the icing bags very well before use. If not massaged well, you will notice that the icing and water is separated (which is a natural occurrence!), and in turn your icing will end up oozing out in watery splotches which can get very messy. So YES, please follow these steps to massage the icing bags:
Step #1. Hold the icing bag with tip pointing upwards to the ceiling.
Step #2. Massage by rolling the icing bag between both palms back and forth.
Step #3. Massage well for at least 1-2minutes for each icing bag.
Step #4. Check that the icing is well mixed by seeing that there are no signs of water in the bag.
HOW DO I CUT OPEN THE ICING BAG?
With the tip of the icing bag still pointing upwards, hold the icing bag with our brand logo sticker facing yourself and snip a VERY TINY HOLE horizontally. Start with a small hole, but if you find it hard to squeeze the icing out from the bag, then proceed to cut it slightly large, a little at a time. Adults, please ensure supervision of kids handling scissors or any sharp objects.
PREPARE CLEAN WET TOWELS/TISSUE
Royal Icing dries and hardens when exposed to air after a while, just like how they dry on the cookies! Tuck the tip of the opened icing bags underneath a damp cloth to prevent icing from drying up at the tip of the icing bag.
WHAT DO I DO WITH LEFTOVER ICING?
We highly recommend that you use all the icing in one seating as it would be wise to avoid any potential cross-contamination or bacterial when reusing the icing. Better safe than sorry!
ROYAL ICING COLOUR DISCREPANCY
Our royal icing colours are hand-mixed and may differ by a little from time to time. In general, our icing colours are pastel and we avoid dark colours as too much colouring is not ideal. We make exceptions
ROYAL ICING FLAVOUR
We avoid using too much artificial flavouring as best as we can, whenever possible. All our Royal Icing, regardless of colour, is flavoured with natural pure peppermint essence. Don’t worry, it’s a faint minty smell and taste and kids LOVE it!
CAN YOU MAKE YOUR ICING LESS SWEET?
Please understand that Royal Icing is made of >90% icing sugar. We are unable to reduce the amount of sugar as that would mean you will get very watery icing. However, the peppermint essence actually helps to balance the sweetness, which is very nice!
